Quick trip to Datong and Pingyao

The boys are out of school for a week and Kenny had a four day weekend for Chinese Labor Day, so we decided to make a quick trip to the cities of Datong and Pingyao.  Datong is a quick 45 minute flight to the west of Beijing.  We spent one night there and visited the hanging monastery and the Yungang Caves which were the highlight of this stop.  There are 252 caves of which you can visit 45.  These caves house 51,000 ancient statues and are truly amazing.

After Datong we flew another 50 minutes south to the ancient town of Pingyao.  Lonely Planet calls it "quite possibly the best-perserved ancient walled city in the whole of the country" and we had a great time wandering the streets and climbing the city walls.
