I've been refraining from writing this post because if there is one thing about parenthood that I've learned is that you never boast, gloat, assume something is a done deal or "count your chicken's before they hatch" with regard to your kids. When they are newborns, if you brag they slept through the night, it won't happen again for 6 months. If you boast that they tried brussel sprouts, 'tried' will become the appropriate word, because they will never 'eat' them again. When you start telling people that they are becoming interested in using the potty, you'd better stock up on at least three more months of diapers. That said, (and I'm sure this will come back to bite me in the arse) I'm pretty sure Jack has given up on sucking his thumb. It feels like it was too easy, but it's been two weeks now and not one nibble, even during the night. We thought he'd surely go to kindergarten still sucking because up until two weeks ago it was pretty much a constant thing. Then one day we were teasing him that he was going to have buck teeth like Mater from the movie "Cars." I guess he took it to heart because that was it. The first couple of nights were rough, but every time he'd start bringing his thumb to his mouth he'd say, "I don't want to look like Mater" and pull it away. The kid seems to have incredible will power.
Another thing I've learned about parenthood is that it is a state of endless worry and guilt. I'm glad he's done sucking his thumb, but now I'm worried we've done psychological damage with the Mater comment. We probably just traded future orthodontia bills for psychologist's bills.
