Memorial Day

On our drive to Paris, the boys and I stopped at St. Avold WWII American cemetery. Over 10,000 soldiers are buried there (28 brothers and 151 unknown soldiers)and it's very peaceful and moving. We could tell they were getting ready for a ceremony and we thought maybe we'd head back up there today to pay our respects. Turns out the observance was yesterday just about the time that we were driving through the area...maybe next year.
I read in the paper today that when asked what Memorial Day means, most kids answer "the swimming pool opens." Truthfully, before moving to Europe, I would have associated Memorial Day with the start of summer. I'm glad we've had the opportunity to learn more about world history and what/who we are supposed to be remembering and saying "Thank you" to. Memorial Day will never be the same for me after our experiences here.

Wow that is really neat. So many people forget the meaning of the day. I totally remember when we were renting being so glad that the swimming pool was open.
