The boys had a week off so we decided to check out Taiwan for a few days. Kenny had to work part of the week, so it was a quick trip, but fun nonetheless. I didn't know what to expect of Taiwan, but it was a blast. It was kind of a "China lite" where most people spoke English and it was definitely cleaner and more organized. Highlights for the boys were shrimp fishing with the locals, and rock scrambling and swimming in the lakes near Taroko Gorge National Park. I couldn't get a clear answer from the internet as to whether Taiwan was its own country. The people we asked in Taiwan answered with a definite "yes", but if you ask a Chinese person most would say it belongs to China, although you still have to go through passport control and customs to enter and exit. If you remember this
blog post about our move here you'll recall that the one item confiscated in our shipment was our Costco globe that listed Taipei as the capital of Taiwan. The authorities didn't find that amusing I guess, but I do find it funny and ironic that one highlight of my trip was shopping excursion to Costco. Wish I would have thought to pick up another globe.
If you don't want to check out the whole post, this was the message we got when our shipment arrived:
"Dear Ken,
Your shipment has been cleared from Beijing Customs now. But the globe in your shipment was seizured, because Taipei on the globe is marked as a capital instead of a city. It is not accepted by Chinese government, since our government only accept one China, one capital---Beijing.
Thank you
